Filomena Marturano becomes Marriage Caribbean Style at Repertorio Español!

REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL ANNOUNCES THE PREMIERE OF “FILOMENA MARTURANO – MARRIAGE CARIBBEAN STYLE”.

 “Filomena Marturano – Marriage Caribbean Style” begins previews on Saturday, July 20th and premieres on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2019 at Repertorio Español’s historic Gramercy Arts Theater located at 138 East 27th Street in Manhattan, New York.

The classic play by Eduardo de Filippo is directed by Leyma López. The cast includes Zulema Clares as Filomena, Sandor Juan as Domingo, with Amneris Morales, Mario Mattei, Mario Peguero, Gilberto Gabriel Díaz, Sandra Gummuzio as well as Krystal Pou, Brayan Cortés Figueroa, and Cesar Augusto Cova making their company debuts.

JULY 03, 2019 – NEW YORK, NY – Repertorio Español, Drama Desk Award winner 2019 is proud to announce the premiere of Eduardo De Filippo’s “Filomena Marturano – Marriage Caribbean Style”. This classic Neapolitan play has been translated by Rafael Sánchez and Leyma López. This comedy originally published in 1946, is one of the greatest theatre masterpieces known worldwide. Repertorio is proud to create the first Spanish showing of this classic in the United States.

ABOUT THE PLAY

In Eduardo De Filippo’s classic Neapolitan tale, Filomena, a former prostitute, has been living with shopkeeper Domingo for 25 years. Domingo is set to marry the young Diana, but Filomena feigns mortal illness to convince Domingo to marry her. When he finds out he’s been trick, he has the marriage annulled. But Filomena will not give up.

EDUARDO DE FILIPPO – PLAYWRIGHT

Eduardo De Filippo was born on 24 May 1900, the son of actor Eduardo Scarpetta and Luisa De Filippo. He died in Rome in 1984. He is also known simply as Eduardo was an Italian actor, playwright, screenwriter, author and poet, best known for his Neapolitan works Filumena Marturano and Napoli Milionaria. Considered as one of the most important Italian artists of 20th century was author of many theatrical dramas put on play and directed by himself first and later awarded and played outside Italy. For his artistic merits and contribution to the culture was nominee Senatore a Vita by Italian Presidente della Repubblica Sandro Pertini.

 

 LEYMA LÓPEZ – DIRECTOR

Born in San José de las Lajas in La Habana, Cuba. From 2001 to 2005 she went to school for direction and acting in the School of the Arts in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba and in 2009 received her degree in Acting and The Arts from The Superior Institute of La Habana. López was the founder and director of Rompecalles in 2007, a theatrical project focused on investigating classic text. In this project, she created adaptation of “Fedra” and “Asamblea de mujeres” (The Assembly of Women), two big stories in Greek mythology, which won the award of Festival Olga Alonso and the Municipal of San José de las Lajas award for Best Play.

López is presently Resident Director of Repertorio Español. She was the recipient of the Van Lier Award for Young Directors in 2012. At Repertorio Español she directed: “Por Gusto” (For Pleasure), “El Loco por Fuerza” (Insane by Force), “Hierba mala nunca muere” (Weeds Won’t Die), “Aire Frío” (Cool Air), “La Fiaca”, “Valor, agravio y mujer” (Courage, Betrayal, and a Woman Scorned), ‘La Celestina” and a series of readings highlighting the works of 17th Century women playwrights. She has received various nominations and awards for ATI, ACE and HOLA.

REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF PULITZER PRIZE WINNING PLAYWRIGHT NILO CRUZ’S “EXQUISITA AGONÍA” (EXQUISITE AGONY).

“Exquisite Agony” begins previews on Friday, May 25th and premieres on Wednesday, May 30th, 2018 at Repertorio Español’s historic Gramercy Arts Theater located at 138 East 27th Street in Manhattan, New York.

 The play will be directed by José Zayas. The cast includes Luz Nicolas, Germán Jaramillo, Gilberto Díaz, Pedro de León, Soraya Padrao, and Gonzalo Trigueros.

Repertorio Español announces the World Premiere in Spanish of Nilo Cruz’s “Exquisita agonía” (Exquisite Agony). This is Repertorio’s fourth premiere of a play by Nilo Cruz. The Company has proudly produced the World Premiere in Spanish of his Pulitzer Prize winning play “Anna in The Tropics” in 2004, and the World Premieres in Spanish of “Lorca in a Green Dress” in 2006 and “The Color of Desire” in 2011.

The New York Times raved about Repertorio’s production of “Anna in the Tropics” stating that “[the play] has found its natural language in Repertorio Español’s new production… It sounds and feels like a very different play in Spanish from the ‘Anna in the Tropics’ in English…its lyrical, poetic flights seem much more at home.”

ABOUT THE PLAY

Exquisite Agony is a delicate but relentless story, which explores a middle-aged woman’s obsessive quest to find fragments of love in a young man who has received the gift of life when he receives a new heart. A moving play of great warmth about the survival of a modern family who must confront the past in order to move forward.

NILO CRUZ – PLAYWRIGHT

Nilo Cruz is a Cuban-American playwright whose work has been produced widely around the United States and Europe. His plays have been seen at McCarter Theatre, New York’s Shakespeare Festival’s Public Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, Arena Stage, Victory Gardens, Repertorio Español, South Coast Rep., Arena Stage, Mark Taper Forum, Victory Gardens, New York Theatre Workshop, Magic Theatre, Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Florida Stage and many others.  Internationally, his plays have been produced in Canada, England, France, Australia, Germany, Belarus, Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama, Japan, Russia, and in many cities throughout Spain.  In 2003 he won the Pulitzer Prize and the Steinberg Award for Drama for his play “Anna in the Tropics” and was nominated for a Tony award.  In 2009 he won The Helen Merrill and The Laura Pels Mid-Career Playwriting Award as well as the Fontanals-Cisneros USA Fellowship in literature. Cruz is a frequent collaborator with noted composer Gabriela Lena Frank.  He recently wrote a set of orchestral songs, “La Centinela y la paloma” (The Keeper and the Dove), for Dawn Upshaw and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, which was conducted by Joana Carneiro.  His monologue Farhad and the Secret of Being, composed by Jim Bauer, was performed as part of the New Voices Musical Festival.  He taught playwriting at University of Iowa, Brown University, NYU Gallatin School and Yale University.

JOSÉ ZAYAS- DIRECTOR

Resident Director Zayas began working with Repertorio in 2004 when he was selected as a fellow of the Van Lier Young Directors Project. Ever since, he has directed seven productions for the company and was named Resident Director in 2013. His production of Caridad Svich’s “The House of the Spirits”, based on Isabel Allende’s novel, at Repertorio Español, won multiple ACE and HOLA awards, including best production and director. Other credits with Repertorio include “Madre, el drama padre”; “Letters to a Mother”; “Nowhere on the Border”; “No Better Friend”, “No Worse Enemy”; “In the Time of the Butterflies”; “Love in the Time of Cholera”, “Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter”, “Burudanga”, “In the name of Salomé” and “Blind Spot”. Outside of Repertorio Español Zayas has participated as director and assistant for a number of productions.

This project was made possible with the support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund as part of Repertorio’s 50th Anniversary.

A Letter to Repertorio…

Theatre is definitely a labor of love. At Repertorio we work very hard to make every single production an amazing experience for our audience. It’s especially challenging when our plays are based on historical events as is En el tiempo de la mariposas.

Recently we received a letter from one of our audience members who came to watch En el tiempo de la mariposas with his wife and wanted to express his thoughts on the show. We couldn’t be more moved by the letter so we decided to share it with all our followers.

 “After taking my wife to see the Saturday matinee performance of En el Tiempo de las Mariposas, I felt I needed to write this letter to comment on this magnificent and highly accurate representation of this important even in Dominican history.

This was the first time I had even seen a play totally in Spanish and it was a wonderful learning experience for me. I was able to understand the dialogue since I was already familiar with the events that had transpired.

For my wife, the show was personal. As a young child growing up in Salcedo, my wife would spend time at the Mirabal house where the sisters would play with her (she is a distant cousin). This show brought back many fond memories of the wonderful times my wife spend with the Mirabal family as well as the painful memories of the tragic events that later followed. Three years ago, she returned to Salcedo to visit the Museum that was created to keep the sisters’ memory alive and had the opportunity to speak with Dede. It was quite an emotional time.

Thank you for presenting such a quality performance at your Repertorio Theater.”

Guest Post: Mariana Carreño King Describes the Process Behind Writing “Señorita 744890”

Michael Palma for Mariana Correno KIng RepOn the brink of starting the last week of rehearsals, I think I speak for the rest of the crew when I say we are very excited!

It has been a very intense process, but also one filled with surprises. Even though, I have a few years working on this play, you really don’t know what works and what doesn’t until you work with actors and designers.

This play started as a monologue. I was reading an article about the effects of solitary confinement on imprisoned women and I remembered a legend which I love titled La mulata de Córdoba. In the story, there’s a beautiful dark-skinned women that doesn’t pay attention to any of the man from her town, her lack of interest in the men around her, causes people to accuse her of witchcraft which in turn leads to her being incarcerated; in some versions she was in a jail in other versions she was held in a cave. Nonetheless, the point is that she is alone and only has a piece of chalk to draw on the walls…I won’t tell you what happens next to not ruin the play for you.

While I wrote the monologue, it didn’t seem appropriate so I chose to add the other characters.

The idea that the play was written by a lonely writer sitting in a dark and depressing apartment is not necessarily true (my apartment is not depressing, just disorganized). Well, maybe the first draft. But plays are a product of many people working together. This play was not the exception. The ideas developed with the help of many artistic residencies where I was able to work with actors and directors, among them, “Playground” with Lark Play Development Center, a “Summer Intensive” with LAByrinth Theatre Company and “INKtank” with Rising Circle.

Daniel Jáquez, the director, has directed three lectures with different actors in the last three years. In every lecture along with the comments from different mentors and actors, the ideas and perspective kept growing. I may take the credit as playwright, but the real credit belongs to all those who have put their grain of sand.

To win the Metlife “Nuestra Voces” National Playwright Competition has been an incredible experience. Repertorio has been a generous and open to the bizarre ideas I come up with. I wrote the script in English, but I love to showcase it in Spanish. To do the translation has thought me a lot about the characters, the story and what I wanted to say; it also helped me to improve the English script. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.

Meet The People Behind “Señorita 744890”

Señorita 744890 is coming soon to Repertorio! Meet the people behind the production of the 2014 winning play of Metlife Nuestras Voces Playwright Competition.

Mariana Carreño King’s Señorita 744890, follows the story of Maria, who finds herself in prison and held in solitary confinement. To accompany her, Maria only has a piece of chalk, sporadic visits from Howard, and a voice. Directed by Daniel Jáquez, Señorita 744890 will take us on a search for inner peace in the midst of the circumstances.

This new drama will premiere on Repertorio’s stage on Tuesday, February 5th at 8pm.

Daniel is a stage director, theater creator and translator. Daniel grew up in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and studied Actuarial Science at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Texas and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the American Repertory Theater/Moscow Art Theater Institute at Harvard University.

Jáquez is the Interim Artistic Director of Milagro Theater in Portland, Oregon. In New York, Jáquez is the Director of the young company Unit52 from Intar Theater and was the producer and director of his NewWorks Lab Festival. Jáquez is an associated artist of V!da Theater in Springfield, Massachusetts and a member of the US/Mexico Playwright Exchange from Lark Play Development Center committee, where he participates as a director and translator.

Jáquez is also a member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, at Latina/o Theater Common’s Steering Committee, at Lincoln Center Theater Director’s Lab and NoPassport, a Pan-American theater coalition.

Zulema holds a degree in Theater Techniques and Choral Direction from Cuba’s National Arts School.  She has worked in theater, film, and television as an actress, playwright, and director.  Her credits include, Las noches de Constantinopla, Tres veces dos y Larga distancia. Her credits with Repertorio include La fiesta del Chivo, La casa de Bernarda Alba, La vida es un sueño, Pantaleón y la visitadoras, Así que pasen cinco años, En el tiempo de las mariposas, Mariela en el desierto, El amor en tiempos del cólera, Fuenteovejuna, Citas a ciegas, La zapatera prodigiosa, Aire Frio, El loco por fuerza y La Tía Julia y el escribidor. Bobby holds a MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. His NY credits include, Su nombre será su sombra  (Repertorio Español), 21 (Repertorio Español), La Ruta (Working Theater), Lawnpeople (Cherry Lane), Luz (La Mama), American Jornalero (INTAR), Brave Ducks (NY Fringe), Julius Caesar (The Drilling Company). Regional credits include Caliban in The Tempest, Feste in Twelfth Night, and Dromio of Ephesus in Comedy of Errors (Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival, LA). Water & Power (The Mark Taper Forum, LA), Water & Power (San Diego Rep, 2008 Craig Noel Award), Vesuvius (South Coast Rep), Blood Wedding (La Jolla Playhouse). Films include, Letters from the Bigman (Sundance Film Festival), Fidel (Showtime mini-series), and Maria Full of Grace (HBO).

Inés is an actress, director and author with a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of Art in acting and directing. Her credits with Repertorio include En el Tiempo de las Mariposas and three short plays from the Siglo de Oro. For her work in The Window, she was nominated by Innovation Theater Awards in New York for Best Actress and with the rest of the cast won Best Cast. Last year she interpreted an original monologue at TEDx.  As a director, she is a member of Lincoln Center Directors Lab and is the recipient of the Van Lier scholarship for young Latino directors to direct two productions at Repertorio. Both productions were nominated for awards by ACE, HOLA, and won an award from ATI.
