Actor Germán Jaramillo Comments on Recent Tour of Repertorio Production, “Cita a ciegas” to Colombia

6- CITA A CIEGAS - Photo by Michael Palma
Mario Diament’s highly acclaimed play Cita a ciegas  is a play that has traveled the world over many times. Almost a year since its New York premiere at Repertorio Español, Repertorio fans have hailed the play as one of the best the company has produced. Directed by the world famous Jorge Alí Triana, the cast recently traveled under the auspices of generous The Mid Atlantic and STELAC Foundations to the prestigious International Theatre Festival in Manizales, Colombia, one of the most important and longest standing theatre festivals in Latin America.

Actor and film star Germán Jaramillo, who plays the role of the Blind Man in this one-of-a-kind play was particularly touched, however, as he returned to the cradle of his career.

“Without a doubt the tour was a great success for Repertorio. For me it was absolutely memorable not just as a return [to Colombia] but rather as a conquest. We performed in a full audience at the Los Fundadores Theater of Manizales, during the evening, something like one thousand people; on Monday afternoon, a difficult day, we had the theatre abour 90% full  and the performance was great; the first time we had performed the play in such a big space, a theater for 1,300 spectators. But the 7PM performance was so unique: clean, refined, full of new details with an alert audience that also had a lot of fun. For me it was very significant because Manizales is my hometown, I grew up there and saw my first plays in that theater, acting in my first plays in my acting career in Colombia. But to return there after so many years and act with a cast of such extraordinary quality like this one presented by Repertorio, in front of my friends from college and school and their families, and the acclaim that we received at the end was an experience like no other.

In Bogotá, it was even more exciting because in the theatre we performed in, the Teatro Libre del Centro, one can say that I literally built it with my own hands. I know its every corner and the day we arrived in Bogotá with Repertorio, we went to see the space . When I stood on that stage and said those first lines of the Blind Man, I again felt the exquisite acoustics in that space, the intimacy of the 200 spectators it can hold, and I was very proud to perform again in that space after fifteen years, together with the actors Repertorio has cast for this spectacle, and directed by a Colombian. All of the performances in Bogotá were praised by critics as well as by the public as an extraordinary experience, a concert of acting, a delightful text and a play full of theatrical scenery, rigor, and recognition of Repertorio Español as a first class company on a global scale.
The Pablo Tobón Uribe Theatre of Medellín wants to host Cita a ciegas, as does the National Theatre of Bogota and the Sociedad Privada de Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. I think it is very much a possibility that there can be a second tour next Spring.”

The tour may be over, but Cita a ciegas is back at Repertorio for the 2014-2015 season. Check out Repertorio’s main website for ticket information and stay alert for updates on another tour of this exciting and intriguing play that has captured the hearts and minds of theatergoers the world over.

In Memoriam: Repertorio Says Goodbye to Gabriel García Márquez

michael palma for repertorio cronica 028

On May 2nd, Repertorio will be honoring the memory of writer Gabriel García Márquez with a special performance of Crónica de una muerte anunciada, one of Repertorio’s longest running productions based on the novel of the same name. García Márquez changed world literature with his countless novels and stories, one of the main figures in the development of the genre of magic realism. Through that vein, he made an indelible impact on our theatre. Repertorio has a long history with the stories of “Gabo”, and check out the past plays that we have had and still have.

michael palma for repertorio cronica 028 Set against the backdrop of a small Colombian town, Chronicle of a Death Foretold explores the chain of events, false accusations, petty errors and biases that lead to the unnecessary, yet pre-determined murder of a young man. It is a tightly woven tale that really captures García Márquez’s spin on “magic realism”, exploring the antiquated moral codes, the conspiracy of silence, and the explosive issues of race and class that lead the story to its tragic ending.

Spanning fifty years of time, the story plays out in a series of short scenic episodes filled with poetry, song, movement and heightened moments of theatricality. One of García Márquez’s most recognizable stories, this critically acclaimed play is a beautiful take on the world renowned novel.

Why you should see “Cita a ciegas” – The Actors Weigh In (Luis Carlos de la Lombana)

Luis Carlos de La Lombana

Mario Diament’s Cita a ciegas is a world of dark and thrilling emotions. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you ponder. It’s one of Latin America’s finest contemporary plays, and it’s having its New York Premiere in a limited engagement at Repertorio Español.

Critics and audiences around the world already agree that you must see this play. Now hear from some of the actors themselves as they tell you why you need to see Mario Diament’s beautifully thrilling piece.

Luis Carlos de La LombanaLuis Carlos de la Lombana is one of Repertorio Español’s company members, as well as an accomplished actor and musician in his own rite. Born in Santander, Spain, he graduated from the RESAD (Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático) and from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Co-producer and actor of the production “La Strada,” his work with that piece and many others have garnered him many awards, including ACE and ATI awards. His credits with Repertorio are many, and include such hits as “Love in the Time of Cholera” and “Life is a Dream,” among many others.

Now with the pivotal role of Hombre in “Cita a ciegas,” Luis Carlos weighs in on his experience with this masterpiece of contemporary Argentine theater.

As an actor, you have a profound insight into this play. With that perspective in mind, why do you think that audiences should come see “Cita a ciegas”?

Porque es una de las mejores obras de teatro en español de los últimos tiempos, que muestra a seres humanos en circunstancias extremas que a cualquiera de los espectadores le podrían ocurrir.

“Because it is one of the best Spanish language plays of recent times. It shows human beings in extreme situations that could happen to any member of the audience.”

Being an actor of Repertorio, what do you think sets Repertorio’s production of “Cita a ciegas” apart from other productions?

“Because it was directed by Jorge Alí Triana who has the experience and wisdom to make the qualities of this play stand out, as well as make it more interesting for the public. He makes the actors embody the piece in a simple way, reminding us of Peter Brook’s most recent works by making a naked and pure form of theater.”

Luis Carlos will be part of “Cita a ciegas” for the entirety of its limited stay at Repertorio, alongside a stellar cast including Germán Jaramillo, Beatriz Córdoba, Zulema Clares and Hannia Guillén.

Repertorio Español Welcomes Two Colombian Giants for an Argentine Production

Renowned Colombian director Jorge Alí Triana
Germán Jaramillo

Colombian movie star Germán Jaramillo

Repertorio Espanol lives close to the pulse of New York’s Latin community. In a city that breathes art and theatre through every vent, the wide spectrum of Hispanic cultures that live here converge their distinct artistic styles into a single, one-of-a-kind flavor found nowhere else. In each show, cultures are deconstructed and sewn back together, creating a patchwork of artistic styles that, otherwise, would most likely never have come together. The audience remains with the unique opportunity to recognize their own culture in works that they otherwise would never have been present.

It is in this profound and tested tradition that Repertorio Español presents Mario Diament’s “Cita a ciegas” (Blind Date). A distinctly Argentine play in the puzzling tradition of Borges, “Cita a ciegas” has travelled the world many times over to much acclaim. It is here, however, at Repertorio Español that this tribute to contemporary Buenos Aires will receive a new production in the expert hands of Jorge Alí Triana, a gifted director from another of Latin America’s greatest theater cities.

Colombian movie star Germán Jaramillo and renowned Colombian director Jorge Alí Triana have come to Repertorio Español to inject “Cita a ciegas” with a healthy dose of paisa flare. Both are giants of the Colombian stage and screen, and both are bound to leave an interesting mark in the world of Latin theatre with this provocative collaboration.

Renowned Colombian director Jorge Alí Triana

Germán Jaramillo boasts a long line of acting and directing credits in film, television and on stage. Most famously, he starred in the internationally acclaimed “La virgen de los sicarios” (“Our Lady of the Assassins”) which was awarded the Gold Medal in the 2000 Venice Film Festival and gave Jaramillo a nomination for best actor. Other films and TV productions include Caracol Television’s “La bruja” and the Mexican production, “Huérfanos.”

Aside from the screen, Jaramillo also claims an impressive career on stage, including the founding of the Teatro Libre, Colombia’s most important repertory theater, and ID Studio Theater in New York.

Jaramillo will be acting under the direction of renowned Colombian director Jorge Alí Triana, who regularly directs at Repertorio Español as well as his own production company, Dramax, where the TV series “Commando Elite” is produced for the television channel RCN.

Jaramillo will be acting alongside actors Beatriz Córdoba, Zulema Clares, Luis Carlos de la Lombana and Hannia Guillén.

Performed around the world to enthusiastic critical and audience acclaim, Mario Diament’s “Cita a ciegas” (Blind Date) is a compelling and riveting play about chance encounters. An intricate puzzle of passions, destinies, and coincidences seduces audiences into a world filled with unrequited love, dangerous obsessions, and the thought of what-might-have-been. In the play, the central character, a blind writer becomes unwittingly entangled in the personal lives of four people with consequences for all involved.

Cita a ciegas will premiere at Repertorio Español on Thursday, October 17th, 2013 at 7pm
