Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month All Year at Repertorio!

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, and what better way to celebrate that to see what Repertorio has in store for its 47th season! Gathering with friends, donors, and the company of actors on Wednesday, September 10th, the list of shows was officially unveiled, revealing a season that excellently captures the rich and diverse heritage that is Latino theater.

Luz Marina Romaguera (played by Zulema Clares) just can’t seem to catch a break. The exasperated seamstress – protagonist of Virgilio Piñera’s autobiographical masterpiece – has two desires in life; a husband and an electric fan to keep her cool from the heat of 1950s Havana. An excellent production directed by former Van Lier Fellow Leyma López, Aire frío is a groundbreaking play of nostalgia cubana with an inspiring and universal message; perseverance.

“SU NOMBRE SERÁ SU SOMBRA PARA SIEMPRE” (YOUR NAME WILL FOLLOW YOU HOME) BY CARLOS MURILLO

PREMIERES NOVEMBER 7TH, 2014 

Winner of the 2013 MetLife ‘Nuestras Voces’ National Playwriting Competition, Carlos Murillo’s Your Name Will Follow You Home touches on one of the most salient issues for young Hispanic-Americans today – the issue of Latino identity. Young writers Javier and Álvaro are determined to discover the true identity of writer Danny Santiago, a writer whose work highly celebrated as a highly authentic of Latino and Chicano identity. When they discover that Danny Santiago is, in fact, not even Latino, they must both face the uncomfortable task of reviewing their own identity as Latino storytellers. Directed by award-winning Resident Director José Zayas, Your Name Will Follow You Home is bound to be one of the most provocative and highly anticipated works Repertorio will produce in the 2014-2015 season.

“EL LOCO POR FUERZA” (INSANE BY FORCE) BY FÉLIX LOPE DE VEGA

PREMIERES JANUARY 30TH, 2015

Félix Lope de Vega’s Golden Age (17th century) piece will be directed by former Van Lier Fellow Leyma López. Already an ACE and HOLA award winning production from it’s previous run on Repertorio’s stage as part of the 2013 Van Lier series, the play follows two lovers who struggle for their freedom after being arrested by a man interested in conquering the lady, venturing deep into the complex issues of human passion. El loco por fuerza is part of a long line of Golden Age plays produced at Repertorio, but even more importantly is a reminder that Hispanic theater is a tradition that stretches back not decades but centuries, making it an undeniable cornerstone of Latino heritage.

REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL PRESENTS OLGA PERICET

A graduate in Spanish dance and flamenco in Cordoba and aware of the present dance scene, Olga Pericet is known as one of the most, innovative figures of the flamenco scene. She has studied with top names such as Matilde Coral, Manolo Marín, Maica Moyano y José Granero, among others, and she has been soloist and guest artist in companies likeRafaela Carrasco, Nuevo Ballet Español, Arrieritos, Miguel Ángel Berna, Teresa Nieto, Belén Maya andThe Spanish National Ballet. She has also shared stages with figures like Ana Laguna, Lola Greco, Nacho Duato,Enrique Morente, Isabel Bayon, Joaquín Grilo, Merche Esmeralda, Carmen Cortes among others. Olga will be the first Spanish Dancer since Pilar Rioja’s last performance, and heralds an exciting new time at Repertorio where dance is back on stage!
